Celebrating 50 years
On August 12 this year Sunshine Coast Airport turned 50, and to celebrate we invited the community along for a once in a lifetime opportunity to ‘walk the runway’ – the first, and possibly the last time that this may happen.
It was a perfect Sunshine Coast morning on August 13 for the 4112 people who came along to take advantage of this unique opportunity to stroll along the main runway and go where only aircraft are normally allowed. People eagerly started arriving at around 5.30am, and the runway was officially opened to the masses by Cr Tim Dwyer at 7am.
There was a fantastic carnival feel on the runway as people told stories of the opening day 50 years ago and shared the experience with family and friends, and generations of families that turned up to share this experience together and be part of history. The runway was enjoyed by all in different ways; everything from brisk laps of the runway as part of a morning exercise routine, to others lying down to look to the skies. The general consensus was that an amazing time was had by all involved.
Aviation and aircraft displays were on offer also, which was a huge drawcard for enthusiasts. It included displays from the Royal Australian Navy, Aeromill Pacific, the Sunshine Coast Aero Club, Queensland Air Museum and Airport Rescue and Fire Safety. AGL Action Rescue Helicopter Service also did a live rescue demonstration which proved to be a huge crowd pleaser.
The major Jetstar prize of a trip for 4 to Sydney was won by a young family from Coolum, and the runway reopened at 9am in time to greet the first scheduled jet for the day and its back to business as usual.
The event was a great success, and thank you to everyone who came along to be part of history and help celebrate this very special occasion, and also the wonderful volunteers that helped bring the event to life. Thank you also to all those who have played their part in making the airport the significant success story it is today; and to all those who will see SCA through its future challenges and growth.
