Sunshine Coast Council has advised the new runway at Sunshine Coast Airport is now due to open on 14 June 2020, subject to weather and the impacts of COVID-19.
Any such disruptions to the program may mean the June 14 date will not be met and programming will have to be reviewed.
Sunshine Coast Airport’s Head of Corporate Relations, Ayllie White said the existing Runway 18/36, and existing flight paths, would remain active and in use until the new runway is operational.
“While jet flights operated by QantasLink, Jetstar, Virgin and Air New Zealand have been suspended into the Sunshine Coast until at least mid-June due to travel restrictions associated with COVID-19, the airport facilitates a number of charter and general aviation flights,” Ms White said.
Ms White said Sunshine Coast Airport had a vital role to play in helping the region rebuild, supporting the tourism industry and creating opportunities for agriculture and construction.
“We know our new runway will position us well into the future and provide new opportunities to local businesses and our community who, with us, are working hard to weather the COVID-19 storm,” she said.
“We also have longer term plans for investment at the Airport including our terminal redevelopment, Gateway Precinct and a freight and logistics hub proposed to be developed over the next five to seven years.
“As the Sunshine Coast rebuilds, so will we – we’ll grow incrementally to help maintain the relaxed feel of the region we all know and love.”
