Sunshine Coast Airport has set a new 12-month passenger record with 959,282 people flying in and out of the airport in the 12 months ended May 31, beating the old record set in January 2009.

Mayor Mark Jamieson said the new record again highlighted that Sunshine Coast Airport was witnessing a period of strong sustained growth that would be enhanced by the airport expansion project that could be underway by the end of 2016.

“Our airport has now recorded 12 consecutive months of year-on-year growth which is an outstanding result and confirms its popularity with locals and visitors alike,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“For May alone, we saw a 14% jump on the same month in 2015 with 68,908 passengers using our airport’s services and taking advantage of the extra options that are now available to them.”

Sunshine Coast Airport general manager Peter Pallot said the airport’s growth was spread across the Sydney, Melbourne and Auckland routes flown by Virgin Australia, Jetstar, Qantas and Air New Zealand.

“All of our carriers have been investing in the Sunshine Coast and to achieve 13% growth in passenger numbers in the last 12 months is amazing,” Mr Pallot said.

“Breaking the January 2009 record of 952,406 passengers is a significant milestone for our airport and we thank our supporters for ‘flying local’.

“We are looking forward to welcoming more passengers with the resumption of Air New Zealand’s Trans-Tasman services on July 1 and the start of Jetstar’s direct flights from Adelaide on September 30.”

Acting CEO of Visit Sunshine Coast Simon Latchford applauded Sunshine Coast Airport on the excellent growth in passenger numbers over the last 12 months.

“The results speak volumes about the marketing boost provided by our collective teams at Visit Sunshine Coast and Sunshine Coast Airport,” Mr Latchford said.

“With the green light given for expansion of Sunshine Coast Airport and the prospect of attracting new international flights in the future, we are very optimistic about our growth prospects in both the shorter and longer terms, especially with the rapidly growing demand from
our key source markets.”

The positive statistics have been further highlighted by the airport’s ongoing leadership of the Commonwealth Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE) growth chart for major Australian airports.

Sunshine Coast Airport has been number one in the country each month since July 2015. BITRE data for March shows the airport experienced a 17.5% increase in total passengers for the month compared to the same period 12 months ago, sitting above Cairns (13.3%) and Gold Coast (9.3%) in second and third place respectively.

Mayor Jamieson said the airport’s sustained growth was great news for the local economy. “The more people we have using our airport, the better it is for our Sunshine Coast residents and businesses,” he said.

“We are seeing month after month of strong figures, and a sequence of records, showing the increased desire by locals and visitors to use our airport.

“Our planned expansion is also being warmly welcomed by the greater Sunshine Coast region, the Wide Bay and North and South Burnett communities who see great value in what we are looking to achieve here, especially with trade markets that will be opened up with much improved access around the country and overseas.”
