Sunshine Coast Airport today welcomed news that Qantas will operate three times a week to Australia’s capital city, Canberra, from 19 November.

The QantasLink service, to be operated by a dual class 110 seat Boeing 717, will deliver more than 2,600 seats a month in and out of the region.

Sunshine Coast Airport Chief Executive Officer, Andrew Brodie said that Qantas, as Australia’s flag carrier, serving the Canberra is a testament to the market demand from the wider Sunshine Coast region.

“We warmly welcome the return of the Flying Kangaroo livery to the Sunshine Coast for the first time since March 2020,” Mr Brodie said.

“To have Qantas servicing our nation’s capital from the Sunshine Coast is a real coup, offering passengers more choice and highlighting the increasing diversity of our market, with a rapidly growing business sector.

“Sunshine Coast is one of Australia’s largest regional economies, and this service positions the region for continued economic growth by serving the travel needs of key industries such as health, agriculture, education and government.”

Mr Brodie said the new services were also a tremendous opportunity for the Sunshine Coast tourism industry.

“This service will provide another direct flight for sun-seeking Canberrans looking to explore our beautiful beaches, magnificent hinterland and relaxed coastal towns,” Mr Brodie said.

“We expect the service will contribute more than $4.5 million to the Sunshine Coast tourism economy and deliver high value visitors to our region.

“And of course it offers Sunshine Coast locals the chance to explore the cultural gems Canberra has to offer, including world class museums and galleries; a vibrant food, wine and craft beer scene; and outdoor activities like skiing mountain biking and hot air ballooning.”

Qantas has launched a three-day launch sale today, with fares starting at $169 one-way.
